Bottega Verde was founded in 1972 as an artisanal herbalist workshop in rural Tuscany. Still a family-owned business, they are now Italy’s most successful cosmetics and skincare brand. With over 500 stores, Bottega Verde is truly an Italian household name.
Having come to dominate their domestic markets, Bottega Verde set their sights on global markets. In Autumn 2015 they sought RMC’s help to realise an ambitious international expansion strategy through brokering new franchise partnerships.
It was clear they had great products, great prices, a superb store concept, and a cool European brand sensibility. They also owned their own R&D laboratories and production facilities, which protected margins and meant partners should expect a steady stream of new products.
But they were almost completely unknown outside Italy. And with little or no international reputation, we couldn’t be sure these qualities on their own would be enough to engage and convince franchise partners. We would need to put more bait on the hook.
By developing a highly competitive, low-risk and high-reward franchise model we were able to appeal directly to the partners’ commercial instincts. When this was placed alongside the brand itself, we knew we had a very powerful proposition. And it worked.
We since signed franchise agreements that will launch Bottega Verde and its sister brand, Glossip Milano, in a total of 10 countries, including Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
These deals represent 60+ store openings over the next five years, and Bottega Verde is well on its way to becoming a genuinely global brand.
