Breaking new ground and building a global brand

Department store retailing has taken a beating over the past few years, and Debenhams has not been immune. But among all the sadness and distress of store closures in the malls and high streets of mature markets, it’s easy to lose sight of the success farsighted retailers have had, and in many cases continue to have, outside their traditional domestic markets.

It’s also easy to forget just how bold and innovative Debenhams was in adopting such an ambitious overseas development programme which, until not so very long ago, could boast 240 stores across 28 countries worldwide.

No other department store business came close to this level of expansion, and we were instrumental in launching Debenhams in Russia, Azerbaijan and the Balkans. And by doing so, we played an important role in helping Debenhams to win ‘International Growth Initiative of the Year’ at the 2013 Retail Week Awards.
