Expolanka Freight Limited (EFL), a division of Expolanka Holdings PLC, is the one of the largest freight forwarders in Sri Lanka and has established itself as a premier provider of services for the fashion industry. Their infrastructure supports multi modal transportation and logistics with Ocean and Air transportation as the core areas and has operations in Africa, the Middle East and Asia and represents multiple agents in the Indian Subcontinent.
They focus primarily on servicing the apparel industry as fashion logistics specialists and have pioneered tailor-made solutions such as Quality Assurance Centers and ‘Garments on Hangers’ services in Sri Lanka with combined multi-modal transportation solutions. Expolanka Freight have a high reputation as a specialist in this key segment of the Sri Lankan economy. Innovation and customer-centricity is built into their wide ranging freight and logistics solutions.
Late in 2011 they embarked on an ambitious project to consolidate their operations in Colombo onto one site by creating a purpose built Head Office and state-of-the-art international freight forwarding hub. This facility was to be capable of handling a variety of consumer products but with an emphasis on creating hanging garment shipments in a “retail ready” condition for manufacturers and retail chains across the world.
Initial designs for the warehouse, its layout and equipment had been submitted by external advisors but before the Directors were prepared to sanction the investment, they requested RMC to contribute a detailed appraisal of the plans and proposed operating processes. Over a period of ten days, the planning data were analysed and volume expansion expectations challenged for robustness. Warehouse layout and equipment requirements were reconsidered and a revised plan was prepared and costed before re-submission for approval.
At the same time, Expolanka had started the process of recruiting a Head of Warehousing who would be responsible for the delivery of the project and its eventual operation. RMC provided technical assistance during the assessment of candidates, their operational knowledge, technical qualifications and previous experience. A Head of Warehousing was subsequently appointed, joining at the start of 2012. Unexpected technical issues with the land and construction have been tackled in the intervening project period by the Head of Warehousing and the new complex successfully opened in mid-2013.
“Tony (Brett) and the team from RMC were involved in the initial conceptualization of Sri Lanka’s first LEED certified warehouse and office facility. In addition to helping select the best resources and outlining roles and responsibilities, Tony’s background of Supply chain & Retail logistics provided valuable insights in developing the initial designs and plans.
Throughout this recruitment & selection process, we were very impressed with their approach and the ability to clearly map out our requirements most of which we were not able to put down on paper. It was like we were working with someone in our own team who had the same dedication and focus to see the project through.”
