Established in 1992, and operating in 12 countries, Majid Al Futtaim Group (MAF) is one of the leading owner-operators of retail, shopping mall and leisure destinations in the Middle East and North Africa, featuring the world-class Mall of The Emirates. With fierce regional competition for customer footfall and loyalty, MAF recognised that savvy customers want “more than just shopping”, they demand great places where they can meet, socialise, eat, relax and also be entertained with family and friends. Consequently MAF have now introduced a number of innovative leisure and family entertainment concepts such as the iconic Ski Dubai, Wahooo! Water Park, and Magic Planet as key ingredients of their total shopping, leisure, and entertainment strategy.
Retail Management Consultants was commissioned by MAF CEO Arnaud Palu to fill a number of key operational roles within the Leisure and Family Entertainment division. These roles required very specific technical training, product experience, and MAF’s unique market position meant that the majority of the target competitor organisations were located outside the UAE. The locations of these posts and the specific host brands varied, but the common requirement was to identify and attract the best talent from their competitors around the world.
A talent-mapping exercise was carried out and suitable prospective candidates were added to those from our own network of industry-specific professionals. As many of the candidates were based in Europe, assessments and interviews focused as much on adaptability and cultural fit as technical competency. This produced a qualified shortlist of candidates who were not only enthusiastic and well-briefed, but who were also prepared for the practical challenges presented by relocation to the Middle East.
