Redeveloping an iconic London landmark

After 50 years of service, Battersea Power Station finally stopped generating electricity and was fully decommissioned in 1983. After decades of neglect, a consortium of Malaysian investors purchased the 42-acre art deco icon on the south bank of the Thames for £400m in 2012.

Since 2013, the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSD) has been working to restore one of London’s best-known architectural landmarks in a £9bn mixed-use project. Comprising contemporary residential, commercial, and retail space, in addition to galleries and a world-class venue for the performing arts venue, the development is expected to see an estimated 25,000 people living and working there, in a vibrant, sustainable community.

When RMC was invited to join the project team, our initial task was to attract the talent and unconventional international start-up brands necessary to turn BPSD’s placemaking aspirations into reality. We needed to develop the curated mix of retail, hospitality, and leisure offerings central to making this hugely ambitious project a success. The demand for difference and experience meant no two units would be identical, nor would there be traditional anchoring or clustering. Of equal importance was placemaking. We are achieving this in such a way as to encourage a positive ambience where living, working, relaxing, and socialising can be enjoyed by residents, workers, and tourists alike, continuing from day into night.

  • As the existing senior team were from a construction or development background, and our main challenge lay in the fact that this was effectively “retail ground zero”, we felt recruitment was the appropriate path to take. Establishing the right culture and ensuring continuity was paramount; we achieved this by identifying and attracting a number of talented people – across diverse functions and seniorities – who not only had the right blend of technical experience and attitude, but also had a genuine empathy with the project.

Battersea Power Station’s iconic status continues today not as a generator of traditional power, but as the power to drive London’s new creative district and generator of creativity and culture. With much of the residential phase complete and some restaurants already open, we’re proud to continue our partnership with BPSD and help lay strong foundations for an exciting future once more.
